Images rooted in place

Educator · Photographer · Storyteller
I’m David Futch. My work brings together education, photography, and a deep interest in place, memory, and story.
Photography
A growing collection of work shaped by light, landscape, architecture, and the quiet details that often go unnoticed.
Local History
Research and writing focused on the places, buildings, and communities that shape Northeast Florida and beyond.
Professional Work
Years of work in teaching, coaching, and educational support continue to shape how I approach people, learning, and communication.
Photography
Photography is where observation, patience, and wonder come together. It remains the work I most naturally return to.
Local History
I enjoy following the stories hidden in buildings, streets, neighborhoods, and old records. Local history gives me another way to pay attention.
Kanapaha Botanical Gardens · Gainesville, FL
I found this tucked away in a quiet corner of Kanapaha Botanical Gardens in Gainesville.
It wasn’t the kind of place you stumble into by accident. You had to slow down, turn a little, and notice it.
I came back more than once to make this photograph. The light never quite lined up the first time. Or the second. I waited for the shade to settle, for the contrast to soften, for the moment to feel right.
There’s a kind of patience that places like this ask of you.
And maybe that’s part of what stays with me.
It’s not just the image. It’s the experience of being there. The quiet. The stillness. The sense that you’ve stepped just slightly outside of everything else.
I think we carry those places with us, whether we realize it or not.
About
My professional life has been shaped by years in education, coaching, and instructional support. Alongside that work, I have always been drawn to images, stories, and the character of specific places. This site is a quieter reflection of those interests and where they may lead next.
